Song of the Day

Apathy feat. Xzibit - "The Recipe"
This song is ridiculous! Ap and Mr. X-to-the-Z take initials and acronyms and flip them into three dope verses. Xzibit sounds really fresh on here and clearly stepped his game up to match the lyrical wit of Apathy. Honkey Kong was one of my favorites from 2011. Going back to listen to all the albums from '11 has been quite a treat.

Song of the Day

Saigon - "It's Alright"
Spent the last two days giving Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told another couple listens in preparing for the Best of 2011 list and this song stood out both times. Really dope song and apparently Kanye did the production on this track. I thought Just Blaze produced the entire album, but saw Kanye get the production credits for this one. Makes sense with the soul sample. Sai's gonna break the Top 10, just not sure exactly where yet. List will be up in a week or so. Got a few of albums to listen to again to make the list final.

Song of the Day

Phonte feat. Pharoahe Monch - "We Go Off"
I've been prepping the Best of 2011 list by going back and listening to albums again and fell on Charity Starts At Home yesterday. Couldn't be happier to be relistening to that disc. Phonte had so many great moments on the disc and this collabo with Pharoahe is among the best. 'Te and Pharoahe both shred the mic over their respective verses and give hip-hop heads exactly what they were hoping for when these two got together.

Song of the Day

Evidence - "It Wasn't Me"
Been listening to Cats & Dogs a lot lately. I was worried I'd be bored after 17 tracks of Evidence. Not that he's not a dope lyricist, but his voice and style don't really alter and over 17 tracks that can get a little old. That's why Rakaa has always served as a great partner to share the mic with over Dilated People's career. But damn, this album is really dope! Great production from the likes of Alchemist and DJ Premier among others and some really dope guest spots from Raekwon, Ras Kass, Rakaa, Termanology, Slug, Aesop Rock and Roc Marciano. I'm a big fan of the album and this track is a great example of what you can expect from the disc. This is vintage Evidence. If you haven't given Cats & Dogs a spin yet, do yourself a favor and get that shit ASAP!

Song of the Day

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire - "I Should Be Sleeping"
I've been putting a lot of eXquire on here lately, but I couldn't resist sharing this track with y'all. eXquire goes into full story-teller mode on this one and paints a hell of a picture. The second verse is my favorite as we find eXquire watching wrestling, reading comics, watching skinamax, Tales From The Crypt and painting his walls with posters of Wu-Tang and Horace Grant. That shit is some straight early '90's right there. Great beat from Charli Brown Beatz as well who laced eXquire with another great beat for "Triple F" off Lost In Translation.

Song of the Day

Murs - "Animal Style"
Murs' latest album, Love & Rockets Vol. I The Transformation, produced entirely by Ski Beatz provided some more great moments in Murs' terrific catalog. "67 Cutlass", "Eazy-E", "S-K-I-B-E-A-T-Z", "Life & Time" and "316 Ways" are all standouts, but nothing hits as deep as "Animal Style." Murs discusses the struggle teens face in being true to their sexuality as he weaves the story of a boy named Jonathon who is forced to hide his relationship with a boy named Rodrick. The narrative takes different perspectives and shows the complexity of their relationship. Song got my attention that's for sure.

Song of the Day

Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P - "The Last Huzzah"
Um, this shit is hard! Just super dope remix over an absolute banging beat from Necro. El-P owns this track. I really liked eXquire's verse as well. This song is an underground gem and a great addition to the catalog. Just listen up. And enjoy the video as well!

Song of the Day

Torae - "Shakedown"
Torae's For The Record boasts a who's who of producers with the highlights coming from DJ Premier, Large Professor, !llmind, Nottz, Diamond D, Pete Rock, Marco Polo and this ridiculous banger from 9th Wonder. Damn 9th came hard with this beat and Torae eats it alive. The album is straight lyricism with head nodding production from some of the all-time greats. For The Record isn't going to change your life or change the way you listen to hip-hop, but it's definitely worth adding to your collection. Cats are making my Best of 2011 list very difficult to make. That list should be up soon. Gotta get through a few more albums and give everything a once over and then I'll have it up and ready.

Song of the Day

J. Cole - "Dollar and a Dream III"
The first track off Cole's Sideline Story and a great way to start off the album. I held off on getting Cole's debut as I wasn't sure where I stood on him, but I got it for Christmas and popped it in the whip yesterday and I'm glad I did. It's a really solid debut. There are some tracks that show just how bright a future Cole could have. It's not a flawless debut and it's not Reasonable Doubt, but it's a quality introduction to the game (if you want to call it that after all his mixtape releases). Cole brings some introspection on the disc including on this song where he promises to make it big so his mom can retire.

Song of the Day

M.O.P. & Snowgoons - "Sparta"
The title track to M.O.P.'s latest album. Listened to the album three times today on the way to and from work. At only 10 tracks it's a quick listen, but it's vintage M.O.P. Only complaint was the audio quality on a few tracks, but that's up to the dude who mastered the album, not Billy Danze and Lil Fame. Snowgoons did a great job of matching M.O.P.'s energy with the production on the album. And I can't believe M.O.P.'s been in the game for 18 years as they say at the end of the second track. That's crazy! 18 years and still one of the rawest and gulliest groups in hip-hop. The video for this track is pretty dope too. It's an unofficial video set to clips from 300 but it meshes well with the track.

Song of the Day

Brother Ali - "Writer's Block"
A new cut from Ali with the same title as this site? A no brainer! Jake One on the beat and it's a nice head nodder. Ali comes correct as per usual. Can't wait for his new project to drop. Great way to start 2012 with new music from Brother Ali.

Song of the Day

Common - "Sweet"
This shit knocks!!! Been listening to The Dreamer, The Believer the last two days after repeated listens to undun (seriously, it's been a great week to be listening to hip-hop music in my car!), and Common dropped another great album. I love this track. Common brings that raw hip-hop sound. There were rumors this song was directed at Drake. Don't know if that's true or not, but it's still vicious as hell. Common and The Roots are battling for Album of the Year status right now. I gotta go back and listen to some other albums again before making my Best of 2011 list, but Com definitely made a case for himself as having the No. 1 album with his latest.
